RONIN

elphinstone

Ronin is the musical manifestation of DJ, producer and promoter Steven Ewing. Known to many as Steve Ronin his impact on the electronic music scene in British Columbia has been broad and diverse.

The first time Ronin touched the decks in front of an audience he was 15 years old with one turn table and a cassette player... Extremely well known by his school friends as the man with the mix tape; Steven had a following long before bore the tag Ronin. This was almost 20 years ago, playing hip-hop, dancehall and R&B and continued to dabble until 1997 when he went on a 4 year traveling adventure.

Steven traveled to Australia and had an epic experience at a trance festival there called Earthcore. This was his introduction into trance music. His technical proficiency as a mixing DJ was rare in the trance scene at the time and made him an instant hit on the Australian trance festival circuit. Playing with the likes of Simon Posford, Ollie Wisdom and Tsyoshi Suzuki; Ronin was performing with the greats of the Psy-trance world. Putting on and helping with the production of some 100 events and festivals in Australia: Steven quickly became a resident on the trance festival circuit all while teaching fire performance, Maori Poi and staff. Ronin also held a residency at the famed Vinyl Bar in Koh Pangnan Thailand, toured Europe and played in Goa India.

He spent the next 9 years exploring the world of progressive psy-trance and brought this sound back to the Vancouver area in 2001. Dominated primarily by the Goa Trance sound: Vancouver had rarely heard anything like what Ronin brought to the decks. The problem that followed for the next few years was that nobody knew where to put him. Too soft and slow for the trance scene and too trance for the non trance scene Ronin slowly started changing his sound and attempting to rock out the chill room.

In 2001 Ronin joined up with a unique group of artists within the Tribal Harmonix Collective and assisted in the production of many events. As the collective shifted; Ronin stepped out on his own and produced a series of events introducing BC event goers to artists and music that helped shape the underground music scene in the area and embracing the down tempo/chill sound as his new stage.

First to bring artists such as Bluetech, Solar Fields, Shulman, Antix, Banel, Shakatura and Phuture Primitive to small and intimate events set the stage for an incredible few years of events and touring.

Responsible for the Chrysalis and Iosis Events as well as the In:Vision festival; Ronin also produced stages at Shambhala and diversity and provided sound through the E13 company with audio wizard Houston Krohman for countless events. Ronin also produced two Fairies and Fools events with Telepaphone productions.

Ronin also toured extensively with Adham Shaikh, Ganga Giri and Bluetech. He also worked with and still works closely with Interchill Records.

In 2005 Ronin and Evan Bluetech started Native State Records and release their first album together called Left Coast Liquid Volume One. This unique release of West Coast chill artists was an instant classic and was also the end of Ronin's time as a promoter.

Too much work and not enough pay forced Steven into the daily grind of work and took him back to his trade.

A two year hiatus ensued, but although quiet, Ronin was never off the decks.

In the summer of 2007 he made his come back with a whole new sound that has put Ronin on the Main Stage, even when it is the Chill Stage.
